Using Ask The Nation

Have you noticed the little box on your reporting page called “Ask the Nation?” This free reporting feature lets you balance your results against census data; ideal for all users seeking projectable data.

More specifically, Ask the Nation takes your panelist information, and based on census data, calculates the demographic profile of gender, age, and region of the national population.

Using this feature requires just one click! Simply visit your reporting page, drop a question’s menu, select Ask the Nation option (shown below), and QuickSurveys will automatically re-calculate your data to be representative of the nation.

ASKTHENATION

Ask the Nation is a great feature when exploring opportunities for growth or innovation; your results will not only give you insightful and useful data, but also a true representation of a marketplace at any one time.

[Something to note: Your sample size must be at least 300 respondents. You may only target by country in order to use Ask the Nation. If you’re targeting additional attributes, Ask the Nation will not be available.]

Go ahead and give it a try today and see how your results balance against census data!

8 Simple and Easy Ways to Avoid Survey Fatigue

Survey fatigue is something that both experienced and inexperienced researchers alike battle with. Why? Well according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine, the average attention span of a human is approximately 8 seconds.

Avoiding fatigue means avoiding invalid data, speeders (those who speed through your survey and select answers without any thought) and dropouts (those who quit your survey before they’ve completed it).

Some key indicators that your survey could cause respondent fatigue can include questions you may be asking yourself, like:

  • Is this survey too long?
  • Are there too many answers in the list for respondents to choose from?
  • Why isn’t my survey filling quotas as quickly as I thought it would?

Here are some tips to avoid survey fatigue:

  1. Ask yourself: Is this question crucial in obtaining the insight I’m looking for? If you can design the survey keeping in mind what data you’re looking for, you won’t ask unnecessary questions.
  2. Orient and welcome the respondent. Create an intro page welcoming the participant, letting them know around how much time this will take, and also how much you appreciate their feedback.
  3. Advanced targeting over screening questions: Adding screener questions sometimes can take a lot of the respondents time, and now that we have the technology to target your precise audience from the get-go, you can jump right into the survey questionnaire, cutting downtime and fatigue. Our advanced targeting offers over 200 demographic and profiling points, which should help eliminate screener questions.
  4. Condensing questions: Use grid and scale questions (like Rating or Matrix/Cross) to ask the same questions among multiple attributes.
  5. Use filter logic: Keep the survey relevant to the respondents and, if possible, use filter logic to skip respondents out of questions that don’t apply to them.
  6. Vary your question types: Try formatting your survey using our wonderful variety of question types. Answering 50 multiple choice questions gets boring and stale. Switch it up to keep the respondent’s mind guessing and also create some fun. You’ll still get your data on the reporting page.
  7. Split a longer survey into multiple shorter surveys. This way, you’re still getting the results you want, but you’re avoiding fatigue.
  8. Preview your survey and take it yourself. If you’re particularly bored or distracted, chances are your respondents will be too! Have a friend or coworker also preview the survey for their opinion.

Next time you create a survey, remember to keep your respondents in mind to avoid fatigue, and in turn avoid invalid data and unhappy respondents!

Maximize Survey Participation via Emails

When you’re sending a survey to your own list of respondents via email, it’s critical to do your best to ensure your respondents will open the email and click through to the survey. To do this, you’ll want to keep these simple and effective tips in mind:

Optimize your subject line.

Keep the subject line straightforward so it’s clear to respondents what they must do. Try asking a question to peak interest, or mention your brand (if applicable).

  • Example 1: ‘Can you answer some questions about movies you’ve seen?’
  • Example 2: Help influence the next MOVIE campaign with your feedback.

Give them a preview.

Before your respondent even opens an email, most will see some preview text (the beginning of the body of your email message). Make sure this text is just as appealing as your subject line so it hooks your respondents. Do you have an incentive you’re offering for each survey completion? Is there any fun background information to share? Include that here.

Timing is key.

When are you more likely to read your emails? It’s probably the same for your respondents. Most of us don’t weed through our inboxes in the middle of the night and are more likely to do so during the day. You don’t want your email invitation to get buried among junk mail and email blasts from retailers, so keep in mind the time zone your respondents are in and when they’re more likely to read emails and send your invitation then.

Optimize for mobile.

More and more people are using their phone versus desktop, so it’s important to test your email to make sure it works and looks good on a mobile device.

Make your list, check it twice.

To ensure delivery of your email invitation to your respondents, take the time to make sure there are no typos in your list and that to the best of your knowledge, they’re valid. If you’re sending the email through QuickSurveys, also be sure that your list is in the correct format for upload by using one of the example files located in the email window on the Launch page.

Adding Targets on the Launch Page

Setting targets allows your survey to reach a specific set of respondents. Did you know you can add up to 3 targets when using AskToluna in addition to the country you have selected?  If you need more than 3, or want very specific demographic or profiling targets, we suggest you take advantage of our advantaged targeting, AskToluna Pro.

In the meantime, if you have simple targets, you can add up to 3 of these

  • Gender
  • Age (18: 55+)
  • Age bands are: 18-34, 35-54, 55+
  • Region
  • Ethnicity
  • Race
  • Education Level
  • Income (annual household)
  • Work Position
  • Shopping (primary grocery shopper)
  • # of Children in household (0: 9+)
  • Household Size (1: 9+)

Here’s how you can do this:

On the Launch Page within AskToluna Pro, select “Target Your Audience” and a pop-up window will appear.

Select your target category, then use the slider to adjust the settings to your liking.

Using the toggle at the top will allow you to go to an advanced mode for your targeting. In the gender example, you’ll be able to check or uncheck male or female here.

Clicking on the down arrows enable you to type in percentages. The percentage box will autofill the number of respondents based on your percentage entered.  Clicking on “Clear” erases responses and brings you back to the advanced gender page.

When you are satisfied with your targets, click UPDATE.  To erase your settings, click RESET

One thing to remember when targeting: since targets vary by market, make sure you select your target country first.

This brings you to a page where you will confirm which of the grouping you would like to merge. Check the targets you want and then click “Merge Selected”

With the result being the screen pictured below.

By clicking the blue arrow in the top left-hand corner of the screen above, you’ll return to the original screen to find the items you selected to be merged now showing as 1 variable.

If you want to include the rest of the targets in your overall targeting, you must at this point, select all of the targets you need to add them to your overall targeting profile. You can adjust the quotas thereafter.

SPLITTING

Splitting your targets is just as simple. First, check the merged target and then click “merge or split answers”

On the next screen, you will have to confirm that same target again and then click “Split Selected.”

Once you are satisfied, you can click the arrow button to go back to the main screen for that target and further merge or split as needed.

The next step from here is to define quotas and determine feasibility .
