Running Incidence Checks

Did you know that you can run incidence checks within QuickSurveys? An incidence check is the rate of occurrence of a stated event within a given population and usually requires a quick, one-question survey. For example, You might run a one-question survey to see the incidence of pickup truck owners in the USA.

Here a few reasons why running an incidence check with QuickSurveys can be helpful:

1.  Get a read on your audience before running a larger study. Running an incidence check will get you a read on important information you’ll need for a larger survey. For example, if you’re running a larger study and know you need 500 completed interviews, an incidence check allows you to know  that you’ll have about 50% screenouts before launching the actual study. Once you run the larger study, you can appropriately sample for this, rather than guessing and having to add more sample later.

2.  Save time and money. Fielding an incidence check can save time and money by providing valuable insights when dealing with certain respondent criteria and/or low incidence samples. In the case for pickup truck owners, you will save money by eliminating the need to oversample when it comes time to launch the actual study. You will also be able to determine how niche or prevalent your audience is among your target population.

3. Reveal attitudes and behaviors: Incidence checks can boost a study by revealing attitudes and behaviors that warrant additional analysis, which may not have been considered prior. QuickSurveys has a real-time reporting dashboard that shows you demographic information. In the example of pickup truck owners, you can view your data by gender to see that males are more prevalent than females in this audience, or even analyze by region. This detailed information may positively impact how you want to sample within your actual study.

4.  Unmatched speed. QuickSurvey is capable of obtaining up to 2,000 respondents in 24 hours or with our panel of Toluna Influencers.  As mentioned in the previous point, the data is shown in real time within the reporting dashboard and can be viewed from anywhere on any device. Incidence check surveys can be done very quickly which is helpful if you wish to launch the larger study on a tight deadline.

Many issues are resolved with the following solutions:

  1. Check to see if you have the latest version of Firefox or Chrome
  2. Make sure there is no pop-up blocker installed on your browser
  3. Try a routine clear cache and cookies from your Internet browser
  4. Try looking here in the resource center to see if we have a tutorial that solves your problem

To help them best assist you, be sure to provide the following details

    • The email address to your QuickSurveys account, not your preferred email
    • Survey Title (if applicable)
    • Browser (if applicable)
    • Screenshot highlighting any difficulties or issues

Here are some recent examples of questions the support team has received from QuickSurveys users like you:

    • “I want to keep my respondents engaged. What question types should I use?”
    • “I need help targeting my audience…”
    • “How do I purchase more credits?”
    • “I need help using the filters…”
    • “Can I exclude respondents who have previously taken one of my surveys?”

Comprehensive Guide to Element Types in QuickSurveys

In addition to question types,  the QuickSurveys tool offers elements such as video that add character and flow to your survey.

Below is a comprehensive list of all element types our platform offers:

Rich Text Element

The Rich Text element allows you to enter a message or text for the respondent to see. This is commonly used for relaying messages or additional information to respondents. An example of when you can use Rich Text is when you want to display a concept to your respondents. The Rich Text element can be the entire concept or appear before or after a concept.

Rich text guidelines:

  • This text can be formatted using an accompanying toolbar
  • Answers cannot be given using this option

Image Element

This element allows for images to be displayed without being directly associated with a question and answer choices. Images may be uploaded or searched via Bing within the tool.  Each image must be 3mb, or 900 x 580px or less in order to be uploaded. (see above Olly example)

Video Element

This element allows for videos to be displayed without being directly associated with a question and answer choices. Videos can be hosted on Vimeo or YouTube, or can also be hosted right on the QuickSurveys platform.  Each video must be 3GB or less in order to be uploaded.

How to upload secure videos into the survey:

  1.  Through the Video Upload, click on Add Video.
  2.  Select if there should be a generic watermark with the video.  The watermark will display at the bottom right corner of the video in the live environment.
  3.  Browse for the Video located on your computer.  Be sure Pop-Ups are enabled for the account or else you will not be able to browse for the video.

Video element guidelines:

  • The video title is automatically updated with the original video file name, but feel free to update as you please.
  • After uploading the video, you can preview the video by clicking on the play button.

Javascript Element

Add custom JavaScript to a survey page to enhance questionnaire with ad-hoc logic. (For example, prefill responses with parameters from the survey URL or auto-populate questions based on previous responses. JavaScript is available to add on the Introduction page as well. You can ask support (support@quicksurveys.com) for programming assistance with this if needed.)

To add Javascript, go to the left section and select the Element type ‘JS’

Add your javascript right into the field and click ‘Save’.

Question Bank

By selecting the star above a question, you can save a question to your Question Bank to use at a later time. You may also remove questions from your Question Bank by unselecting the star.

How to add a question from the Question Bank to your survey:

  1.  Open the Question Bank by selecting its icon under Elements in the toolbar on the left of your survey Build screen. You can import questions from your question bank or from other surveys that have been created in your account.
  2.  Select the question(s) to add to your survey by selecting the box to the left of each question.
  3.  Select Import to add them to your survey.

Secure Video Hosting

Recently at Toluna QuickSurveys, we added two innovative features to our DIY survey platform: Random Assignment and Secure Video Hosting.

With Secure Video Hosting, users can add video to surveys quickly and easily. Users can now upload video safely and securely from their own device with the peace of mind that their content is protected.

Videos will embed directly into the survey, where respondents will view the video without the ability to pause, rewind or fast-forward, forcing them to watch the entire video before proceeding on. There’s also an optional watermark that may be added for additional security.

How to upload secure videos when building a survey in Toluna QuickSurveys:

4. The video title is automatically updated with the original video file name, but feel free to update as you please.

5. After uploading the video, you can preview the video by clicking on the play button.

Effectively Use Rating Scale Options

If you’ve used our Rating Scale question type recently, you’ve likely noticed that there are now 15 pre-populated rating scales for you to select from, each of which is completely customizable. Additionally, you also now have the option to create your own, original rating scale.

Here are some things to keep in mind when creating your rating scale question:

  • All pre-populated scales are 100% customizable, so if you need an idea to get you started on your own rating scale, feel free to edit any already existing scales as you please.
  • You can create your own 100% customized scale by clicking on “Custom”.
  • Values that are associated with each scale point are customizable.
  • Including the “Add exclusive comment field” option will override all answers included in the rating question.  Respondents will then be able to type an answer into an open-ended text box instead of answering the entire question.
  • At least 1 item and 2 rates are required per rating question.
  • There is a maximum of 15 rates and 20 items per question.

For a list of all question types, read our post here, or watch this video below on Rating Questions:

4 important things to know about setting Skip Logic

Skip or filter logic is a powerful aspect of survey construction. When done properly, you can expertly guide the right type of respondents to the questions you need those specific people to answer, and no one else. In addition, skip logic makes the survey shorter for the respondent, resulting in better data quality.

When done improperly, skip logic can quickly ruin your entire survey through any number of ways, including accidentally filtering the wrong demographics, or having respondents skipping important questions.

To prevent this, we suggest 4 things to remember when setting up Skip Logic.

To prevent this, we suggest 4 things to remember when setting up Skip Logic.

1. Be organized. Logic can get confusing if you aren’t organized. Be sure to click the gear icon on the top right of the Build screen to visualize your logic.

2. Overlap. Make sure that you don’t have filters that are repetitive or overlapping with other logic rules. Repetitive logic filters can clutter the work flow.

3. The order matters: If you have more than one filter set for the same answer choices, the first filter you program takes priority.

4. Preview and Test. Be sure to preview your survey to make sure you understand how your audience navigates the survey, and to make sure that your logic makes sense and works properly.

Sharing Your Reports

When running a survey through QuickSurveys, you have automatic access to our advanced data visualization and reporting dashboard. On the reporting page, you can manipulate data to do things like create cross-tabulations, subpopulations, derived questions, apply custom weighting, and so much more. In addition, you can share reports with others, and even collaborate on the same reports.

There are two ways to access your survey report: you can click on View The Report located on the Launch page of your survey, or you can get there from the main dashboard page by clicking on the bar graph icon under the Reporting column.

When on the reporting page, simply click the box and arrow icon (shown below) to open your sharing menu.

You’ll see multiple sharing options: Share a fresh report, a copy of current report, or work on the same report (shown below).  You can also password protect the report, should the data be sensitive.

You’re also able to select as many of these permissions as you’d. For example: read, write, share, export and access template library will give them full access to the report.

There are 4 options for sharing your report:

Read: Granting them Read access will not allow those you share the report with to manipulate the report in any way or export it to share with others. This way your existing analysis will remain untouched.

Write: Granting someone the Write permission will allow others to modify the report you’re sending to them, whether it be the current report you’re working on, or a fresh report. This is especially helpful if you and a colleague or client both want to conduct a separate analysis of the data.

Share: This permission will allow whoever you share this report with to in turn share it with others at their discretion.

Export: Those with Export access will be able to download a copy of the raw data file, or export the report in PPT, SPSS or XLS format.

Access template library: This will allow your colleagues to export reports into the templates you have uploaded, or to upload their own to export.

It’s also important to note that if for some reason you need to revoke permissions, you may do so at any time within the same sharing menu. Aside from setting a password, you may also opt to set an expiration date so the report is no longer accessible after a certain period of time.

12 Tips for writing an effective questionnaire

What some people may not realize is that many times when you come across issues with your survey data, it can link back to the questionnaire itself. Perhaps you drafted leading questions, mistakenly allowed unqualified respondents into your survey, or fatigued your respondents with too many unnecessary questions or answer options.

Whatever the cause, we’ve compiled a list of tips to keep in mind when drafting a questionnaire to avoid the most common mistakes people make:

1. Keep the results you’re looking for in mind. Don’t mix in unnecessary questions or choices that could end up clouding your data.

2. Keep your target audience in mind. Don’t ask questions that wouldn’t apply to the respondents taking your survey.

3. Be clear and consistent in the way you compose your questions. Write questions that all respondents will interpret the same way. The respondent shouldn’t have to trigger an error message to know how they’re supposed to effectively answer the question.

4. Stay organized. Don’t jump from one topic to another, then back to the first topic again. This could result in confusion for your respondents and potentially bad data.

5. Avoid fatiguing your respondents. Only ask the questions you need to and a sufficient amount of answer options.

6. Pay mind to the question types you use. Use formats that are most conducive to the question you’re asking.

7. Avoid asking yes and no questions. Don’t lead the respondents into untruthfully answering their way into qualifying for your survey.

8. Avoid leading questions. These can lead to bias responses from your respondents.

9. Balance your scales. Make sure you have a neutral point to your scale, unless otherwise necessary.

10. Randomize or alphabetize answers when necessary. Randomization will avoid magnetism of a point of your answer list and therefore bias in your data. On the other hand, alphabetizing can be used when listing answer choices like brands.

11. Use filter logic. This will prohibit respondents from answers unnecessary questions that don’t necessarily apply to them, based on how they’ve answered up until that point.

12. Carefully place screening questions. Majority of the time, the appropriate place for these screening questions is at the beginning of the survey.
